Academic Counseling
The Academic Counseling Department is committed to a student-centered guidance program that supports the personal growth of each student in attaining their maximum potential by helping student identify their academic strengths, weaknesses, interests and intellectual abilities.
The Academic Counselor serve as a resource to students, teachers, parents and community groups and provide information for educational planning and course selection. Students can meet individually with the Counselor to discuss academic difficulties, and learn strategies to help them become better students. Personal interest and abilities are assessed along with resolving personal issues and adjusting to a new home away from home.
The Counseling Department complements services provided by the teachers or sponsors, for instance, New Student Orientation, Freshman and Sophomore Academy, Senior graduation checks and audits to guide students through a post secondary and career learning experiences.
The Academic Counselor takes an active role in educating parents of their vital role and responsibilities to help student(s) meet greater academic demands while establishing appropriate timelines and goals. Parents are encouraged to help guide and support their student(s) to plan ahead for life after high school. Information on summer programs are collected and distributed to parents and walk-in consultation is encouraged. |

After-school tutoring services in the areas of Mathematics, Science, English, Spanish, and Navajo Language are made available Monday to Thursday. Other subject areas can be arranged upon request. Computers are supplied for students’ use to work on research or other writing projects during Study Hall. Students with a Semester term GPA of 1.99 or below are placed on Academic Probation/At-Risk Program and are required to participate in tutoring and study hall among other interventions. |
There are two major college entrance examinations: the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT. The SAT tests critical thinking and problem solving skills in reading, math and writing. The ACT is designed to measure general educational development in English, math, reading and science with writing as optional. The Academic Counselor administers the national testing as a preview to the SAT and the ACT to identify skills necessary for improvement. Other State assessments measure students’ academic development, career exploration and assesses college readiness.

San Juan College
The Academic Counselor assist students interested in taking college courses to enhance their curriculum by enrolling in the Early Admit Program. The program offers students an opportunity to experience college surroundings while earning college credits.
Summer Programs
The counseling department assists students to participate in a diversity of summer camps and college-sponsored programs where students can immerse themselves in something they love to do. Summer academic opportunities offer students a range of activities to improve academic skills and to explore and discover unique culture and languages
